Over The Shoulder

Over the shoulder is probably the most common use of cameras in 3rd person games. The camera follows behind the main controllable character.

Top Down

Strategy games use top down set ups the most. Being able to see a lot of the map and where all the characters are at the same time means that some of the element of surprise is taken out of the gameplay, so winning or losing is more based on the players skills in strategy and ability to observe all parties, predict what the enemy is likely to do next.

Isometric / 2.5D

Isometric (sometimes referred to as 2.5D) is a way of making the game environment look 3D, while actually still in a 2D plane.
