2nd Person Cameras

2nd person camera is when you are watching the main playable character from the perspective of another character.

This type of camera perspective is rarely, if ever, used in video games. The only notable example of the use of a second person camera is Super Mario 64. In this game, the camera is controlled by a news reporter called Lakitu, who follows Mario around on his adventures on a floating cloud. The player can control the angle of Lakitu's camera using the c pad but can also change to first person for a short while if Mario is stood still by holding R, however, he cannot move if the first person is being used.

While this aspect of the game is quirky and unique, it doesn't really add anything to the game for the player. The player still has the same angles available as if the game was 3rd person, and it is quite easy to forget during the game that you are watching through Lakitu's camera. The player only sees Lakitu briefly when the game is loaded up and at the end of the game.

I think Super Mario 64 chose to implement a 2nd person camera to add a reason to why you see the character you are controlling rather than seeing the game through the character's eyes. It makes sense to add a character in there with a camera to answer the question of how we are seeing the character, however, it's not really needed. Gamers are used to the idea of a 3rd person perspective, and don't usually question how and why they see the character from this perspective. The use of 2nd person camera in media is unnecessary and might even make the game less immersive - the way a movie would be less immersive if you were constantly aware of the camera operator.

Another way a 2nd person perspective can be used in games is through narration. This is used the most in text based games, but is also sometimes used in fighting, racing or exercise games, in the form of an announcer, mentor or instructor. This isn't the use of a 2nd person camera as such, but they can use a 2nd person perspective, by talking to the player in 2nd person i.e. You open the chest to find an item. This is like the game is being told from the perspective of a second entity, a narrator, while you are completing the actions of the main character.
